Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I get a system error at startup?
A system error at startup is an indication that the installer has not successfully installed the voice recognition engine or the TALON application. Make sure you have administrative rights to the computer you are working on, and repeat the installation steps defined in the Quickstart portion on p. 2 of the TALON user guide.
When I play back my recording, I hear nothing and the waveform is a flat line. Is that right?
If you have used the microphone to record, a waveform should generate. If no waveform is generating, the microphone may not be connected properly. Please refer to the Microphone Setup portion on p. 15 of the TALON user guide.
When I play back my recording, why does my voice sound very distorted? What does it mean when the waveform fills the entire vertical part of the display?
A distorted playback or an extensive vertical display is an indication that you are too close to the microphone or that the microphone level is too high. Try adjusting your audio recording level as described in the Microphone Setup portion on p. 15 of the TALON user guide.
When I play back my recording, why does my voice sound very faint? What does it mean when the waveform barely shows a ripple?
A faint playback or a minute waveform display is an indication that you are too far away from the microphone or that the microphone gain is too low. Try adjusting your audio recording level as described in the Microphone Setup portion on p. 15 of the TALON guide.
When I record my responses, why does the green “recording” bar seem to keep going long after I finish speaking? Why is there a lot of noise before and/or after my recorded voice?
The recording bar keeps going because the microphone is detecting background noise before or after you are speaking. The microphone will stay activated until it detects .5 seconds of silence. Make sure you are in a quiet area and confirm that there is no background noise. Then try recording again.
I know I am speaking the Arabic properly. Why doesn’t the system recognize what I’m saying?
A variety of external factors may be influencing your recordings:
- Ambient noise may be influencing your recordings. Verify that your environment is quiet and free of ambient noise.
- The microphone setup may need to be adjusted. Adjust your microphone as suggested in the Microphone Setup portion on p. 15 of the TALON user guide.
- The Iraqi dialect may be subtly different from the Modern Standard Arabic pronunciation. Pay close attention to the example audio, and try recording again.
- The voice recognition acoustic model is designed to work equally well for men and women. Certain voice types, however (i.e., low male voices or higher female voices), have lower recognition success. Try artificially lowering or raising the tone of your voice to more closely match the pitch of the sample audio.
Is the TALON application available in other languages or dialects?
At this time TALON is available only in the Iraqi Arabic dialect.
